![]() ![]() Having played the previous Project Cars title, I was a bit nervous jumping into the third iteration. Is this one one racer that gets left in the dust, or does it pave its way to top with it’s new direction? Find out in our Project Cars review! The Not So Serious Brother ![]() With their eyes set to offer a more accessible racer, we take their latest for the ultimate road test to see if it can handle being on the same tarmac as the rest of the racers. This will probably be the last we see of Project Cars unfortunately.Slightly Mad Studio is once again back behind the wheels, this time with the third installment of the beloved racing sim franchise, Project Cars 3. A number of reviews have asked "who is this for?", that's really not what you want when you release a game. Then there's the added problem with this game where it's trying to straddle the middle between the who demographics I described above (at least in terms of how they have marketed it, the reality seems to be different). Like I said above, the fact that they've chosen to use the Project Cars brand to produce a game like this feels like a slap in the face. There are a lot of people who have put a lot of financial and emotional energy into making the games become a reality. They were also largely community funded and developed. The reason for the controversy surrounding this game (Project Cars 3) in particular is the fact that the previous 2 games were created to appeal to the more serious crowd. Neither person is more correct than the other but the important thing is recognising what you want and then selecting the appropriate game. On the other hand some people who were once into sims can't be bothered with the whole wheel and pedal thing anymore and want a more pick up and play controller on couch experience so they will seek out game like Forza/GT instead. Some people who like games like Forza/GT will "graduate" to the more serious stuff because eventually that's what they are looking for, they want the added granularity. ![]() Sometimes people cross over from one category to the other. Those games exist and have their following, the more serious sims exist and have their following. Games that contain cars and race tracks don't all need to be like GRID or have a structure like Forza/GT. The thrill and tension is in the moment for those who it appeals to, audiovisual ADHD vomit is not necessary. You pick a car, you pick a track and you hot lap or set up a race. ![]() If you aren't interested in shaving tenths of a second off lap times, perfecting racing lines, tweaking setups on a per-track basis, attack/defense strategies when racing, tire/fuel wear/usage and pit strategies, driving/racing on inch accurate laser scanned tracks, etc then no, those games probably aren't going to be for you. The aim is to be accurate representations of driving/racing when using a FFB wheel and pedals rather than something that could be considered "fun" or "gamey" and primarily targets controller users. At risk of sounding pretentious, have you never realised that most of the driving sims out there aren't aiming to be videogames first? It's in the name, they are aiming to be simulators first. ![]()
